Oldtimer Souldies Series No. 12 - Angeleno Action

A Must Have!!

Here's RossyBoy with his Introduction....

Black Ice on the cover; caused the pensioners' bus to skid and break down, but the three veteranos managed to jump a freight car heading South-West to the City of Angels to catch up with Guy. We were like three old hobos, poor of pocket, but rich in great soulful tunes to lay before our East L.A. brother when we made it to Echo Park. But Guy wasn't totally happy - "The ladies of L.A. are FIRME!"  he said. "Where are your femme tracks?" But we stuck to our gangsta guns: "We don't even have a Whispers' song, never mind Ty Karim; we can't please everybody, there's just so much to choose from!" burst out BillyMac. "And anyway, she may not be Eleanor Green, but Cheryl Boyd is definitely a LADY, on lead for The Superbs!" countered RB. The Mello man, living up to his name and just as smooth in person as his jams are, got it all calmed down: "Just like previous comps, I'm sure the track list will meet with everyone's approval. It looks like we'll just have to re-visit all these soul cities!" Guy dropped in that Karen Small classic, so he was happy that he looked out for his hynas. And here we are now with our latest offering of tracks and artists associated with Los Angeles. It's been a great music year for us putting together this Oldtimer Souldies Series. We hope you've all enjoyed the series too.  For those in catch-up mode there are new links for the series listed way below the tracklist.

Oldtimer Souldies Series No. 11 - Chicago Sugar

The Veteranos are on the road again. The pensioners' bus has headed north to Chi-Town for some cruising round the Chicago soul scene. As ever, there are some classic favorites, but you may well find some harder-to-find tunes as we leave the main roads and tour the back streets. Give us the green light if you like what we came up with. Those are The Vibrations on the cover. Talking of vibrations, maybe this ramshackle old jalopy will hold itself together for some further mileage!

Oldtimer Souldies Series No. 10 - Philly Flavors

The Veteranos have thrown away their zimmer frames and are struttin' their stuff once more! We're continuing our Soul Tour of U.S. cities, after our summer break, with the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia. We define Philly Soul as tracks performed by an artist who was born in the city or recorded in the city. No shortage of candidates for Philly then, with its fabulous soul heritage! As usual, these are our favorite tracks so you'll find plenty of familiar sounds for a trip down nostalgia lane. But you may well find something a bit more unusual for your collection too. Since we're label guys anyway, we've included some extra info on each track this time round, since that's the kind of stuff we swap among ourselves anyway. That's the legendary 60's Philly DJ Sonny "The Mighty Burner" Hopson on the cover. And I can't help but question whether Sharon Paige ever sounded as sensual as she does on track #14 ?? This ol' veterano just drools over such music! Enjoy, and and let us know what you think so we can be stimulated for further exertions. RossyBoy for The Veteranos

Oldtimer Souldies Series No. 9 - Motown Memoriez

The Veteranos have taken a trip to the Motor City for our latest offering. As you would expect, most of these tracks are from the Tamla-Motown stable, although there are a couple from other Detroit labels too. Berry Gordy's troops were notorious for covering each other's songs so there are quite a few examples of that here. The rare color cover pic is from the Tops' appearance on British television in March 1970. It's from a recently discovered, color video recording of them performing “I Can’t Help Myself” on March 15 for Sir David Frost’s “Frost on Sunday” variety show. I managed to see them at the Finsbury Park Astoria in North London on that particular U.K. trip of theirs - memorable performance and incredible atmosphere ! Maybe you can get the same sense of nostalgia listening to this set. Enjoy, and let us know ! RossyBoy for The Veteranos

The Veteranos still have a spring in their step, so we thought we'd bounce back with some more Northern stompers from our favorite girl groups. The last two collaborations in this series have been immensely popular from a downloads viewpoint - pity about the comments or relative lack of them ! How will we know how we're doing unless you tell us ?!? Anyway, here are some more upbeat up-tempo numbers - some familiar foot-tappers and some head-scratchers. That's a rare picture of The Fawns on the cover. The Sherwoods at #17 and #20 are different groups with the same name - both can belt out a tune ! Over to you now - drop us a line once you've heard this set. The Veteranos

Oldtimer Souldies Series: Dominant Males Vol. 6

The Oldtimers have been having a little rest and recuperation; but now we're back with a bang to put our favorite menfolk in the spotlight. As usual, it's a mix of downright unequivocal classics and some  rarer gems that may be useful for your collections. Jackie Wilson's "Lonely Teardrops" featured here at #09 is the slower, bluesy version. And that's Ronnie Walker a.k.a Fletcher Walker III on the cover pic. Oldtimer Souldies Series: Dream Boy, Dream Girl Duets Vol. 5

It takes the veteranos a little while to get up to speed, but once we get that momentum going, we're very hard to stop ! So here we are again, in scarcely the blink of an eye, with yet another volume in our Oldtimer series. The title speaks for itself and and as before you'll find the expected classics plus a few out of left field. Hardly surprising that Peaches & Herb are represented here twice; they instantly spring to mind when duets are mentioned. Of course, there were several combinations of personnel using the name and it's one of the early pairings that feature on the cover. Marvin is in a couple of times too - again, only to be expected, as he is synonymous with this genre. There are two versions here of "I Want You 'Round", the better known one from Marvin & Kim plus an unreleased cut from Mary Wells & Smokey.  In case you think we are suffering from gender confusion the "Johnnie" on track #04 is actually Johnnie Louise Richardson. Also, many combos had a crack at the song on track #23, such as Peabo Bryson with both Patti Austin and Roberta Flack; Roberta had a go at it with Donny Hathaway too; but the one featured on this set is the original version. We assume that the almost deathly silence in response to this series is because you are too busy enjoying the tunes to comment; certainly there have been many, many downloads so that is why we feel obliged to continue. So listen out for more to come. The Veteranos

We hope you get as much enjoyment from this set as we did putting it together ! Let us know ! P.S. That's the late lamented Loleatta Holloway on the cover.

Oldtimer Souldies Series: Northern Soul Favorites No. 1

The Veteranos just love to have fun ! So we've dreamed up this series to exploit almost 200 man-years of cumulative knowledge of soul music's many sub-genres. And we're kicking off with Northern because it's not the sort of music we tend to feature too often; nor would we pretend to be especially knowledgeable about this genre but we've picked some of our personal favorites from the many thousands available. Of course, a couple of my brothers couldn't help but pick some of their local Chi-town and Philly faves, so at least there will some lesser-known tunes to set against the popular ones in this set. The Frankie & the Classicals' track at #04 features the original spoken intro. And I've included a bonus track at #13 as a special request for soulboy. Let us know what you think, so we might be encouraged to produce more compilations in this series. Hopefully, you'll enjoy this upbeat "Feel Good" music. RossyBoy
