It may not be everyones taste but I don't care, lol These are some tight ass doowop melodies in my book & I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed compiling it, so let me know how I did this time around and Thanks!
Big ups to RossyBoy for working on my covers & thanks to him that I can keep this series rolling!
A little 411 on some of these selections & as always corrections are welcomed...
My opoligies for making it so long!
01.The Vibrations - Stardust 1966 - Okeh Starting off in Los Angeles in 1955 AKA Jayhawks, Vibes, Cleeshays, and Marathons. landing many labels such as Checker, Chess, Atlantic ,Epic they also worked with songwriters/producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. The group struggled on until 1976, when, with no hits since 1968, they finally called it quits. They went through a lot: a lot of name changes, a lot of labels, a lot of frustration in not being able to record what they wanted. Still, they had a 20-year career and a handful of hits. That's more than most groups ever had.
02. Kenny Vance & The Planotones - Oceans Of Time 2009 - LaPlano Records, From New York City, Born Kenneth Rosenberg & The Founding member of the group Jay & the Americans
03. Diane Jenkins & Group - Anniversary 1973 - Creative Funk Music, From New York City
She was also the lead singer of the band Creative Funk (Ready Made Family) which gave name to the record label that the group founded to release their own records. Sending this killer track one out to my friend Soulman,I found it! :D
04. Dr York - Life Is But A Dream 1986 - York's Label
05. The Martels - Forgotten Spring
1959 on Cessna 477, AKA Martellls 1961 On Bella
06. The Four Jewels - Baby It's You 1964 - Tec Records
07. The Ensenadas - Love I Beg Of You 1963 - Tark Records 45
08. Charles Andrea & The Hi-Tones - Didn't We Have A Nice Time 1961 - Toni Ltd
09. The Charmettes - Why Oh Why 1962 - Tri Disc 103, There were two groups that used the name Charmettes. One group was a white Trio from New York that was around in the late 50's and early 60's. This group was black and they came out in in mid 60's from the midwest. Another group called the Sharmettes makes it very confusing to me because they kinda all sound the same!!.
10. Little Sammy & the Tones - Can You Love Me 1960 - Shade label
11. The Fabulous Egyptians - End Of Time 1965 - Cindy
12. The Andantes - If You Were Mine
1964 - VIP From Detroit....I recall this group were backup singers for Motown Artist..this is the B side of thier first single called "Nightmare"
13. The Fantasys - No One But You 1960 - Guyden
14. The Magic Tones - Tears In My Eyes 1958 - Howlum Label, Magic-Tones can be traced back to the 5 Kings, a group that formed in Baltimore in early 1951. This background is a little lengthy & this is only half the info, But I love this story! They were standing backstage, nervous as only first-timers can be, when they heard the call for the 5 Kings. However, by the time they got on stage, there was another group at the mike (you may have heard of them) a less-than-obscure Baltimore act called Bobby Hall and the Kings). It was an honest mistake; the club owner had forgotten that the Kings had also been booked. By the time they finally got to sing, they'd been hastily renamed the "Dreamers. "So now they were the Dreamers; a name no one could take away from them (right up until the day they met up with another Dreamers group). Now they were really frustrated. They determined to get a name that no one else could come up with. The result was the "Magic-Tones." This time they'd done it. There wouldn't be another group with that name (although without the hyphen) until 1966. In the fall of 1958 they once again traveled to New York, this time to record for the tiny Howfum label. They waxed at least two songs: "Spanish Love Song" and "Tears In My Eyes," which were released late that same year.
15. The Candlettes - Wrapped Up In A Dream 1963 - Rhonda Label
16. The Harptones - If I Give My Heart To You 1982 - Ambient, formed in Manhattan in 1953
(Check out my U-Tube video @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSPFvGdq1uM)
17. The Moonglows - Gee 1964 - Crimson Label, From Cleveland, Ohio, But Harvey Fuqua and Bobby Lester, previously sung together in their hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.
As rhythm & blues innovators with an exquisite vocal blend, the Moonglows were among the finest black harmony groups of the Fifties. They called their jazzy vocal group the Crazy Sounds, but Alan Freed renamed them the Moonglows. When the group reshuffled its lineup in 1959, a young Marvin Gaye became one of the new members
18. The Clickettes - Dreams Come True The year is 1957. The place Manhattan in New York City. Vocal Group Rock & Roll recordings are filling the airwaves. This is the inducement of a group of High School girls to form and try to emulate the sounds by hitting their own notes.
Barbara Jean English, lead of this group and her colleagues changed their name from the Clickettes to the Fashions In 1961, after Zelma “Zell” Sanders, the owner of J & S Records wanted to claim ownership of their name.
19. The Fascinators - Who Do You Think You Are
From Brooklyn, Lead Singer Anthony Passalaqua (aka Tony Richards) tho just a tenor occasionally had to smoke cigars before appearances or record sessions in order to deepen his voice! Capitol records wanted to sign Passalaqua as a single artist, but he insisted that he would not go forward without the group. Thats what I call a true friend!
20. Darnell & The Dreams - The Day Before Yesterday 1964 - West Side, From New York Bronx
This group was originally called The Essentials. Jessamay Darnell became famous as a result of her affiliation with The "Vestells", who recored for Decca Records
21. The Montereys - Face In The Crowd 1963 - Blast, This Group is from Brooklyn formed in 1961 by John Randazzo,Tony Giordano,Vicent Esposito and Rich Torelli (Vicent soon replaced by Billy Schalda).
Johnny Randazzo, the lead singer of the Monterey’s past away in 1989
22. The Dolls - Just Before You Leave 1958 - Teenage Label
23. The Jive Chords - Why Can't You Be True 1961 or '62 - Aljon....From Brooklyn, NY. They had no released recordings other than one that was on a 1964 Moon Records LP. They recorded for Al Browne owner of Joyce & Aljon Records. (Big Thanks to my friend & former Radio DJ DooWopDJ, for this info)
24. Etta James & The Flairs - Don't You Remember Born Jamesetta Hawkins, (AKA Miss Peaches) Sometime in early 1955, The Flairs backed up a young Etta James on this song ( the same tune as the Aladdins' "Remember"; ) it had been written by the Aladdins manager and Johnny Otis, who was involved with both acts). The song remained unreleased until a 1961 Crown LP. James & Otis both passed away this past January in the same week.
25. Just Friends - It's Too Soon To Know Another favorite "It’s Too Soon To Know" is an American doo-wop ballad, first recorded and released by The Orioles, was a shock, a dead-in-your-tracks, what-is-that? sound, stylistically confusing yet emotionally undeniable. Covered by many artist... This Noo Wop Group just nailed it for me!
